Travellers Primary Care Service

The need for travellers primary care services was identified and professionals and travellers worked together to establish a dedicated service for travellers.

The project involved travellers from day one. They have 'grown into it' and are now confident and more assertive.

Patients are self selected and close working with the warden of the site - 85 residents in 12 pitches also assists in identifying patients.

Positive results have included immunisation uptake; cervical cytology uptake; less A&E attendances; DNA's at GP surgeries.

This is a true team effort led by Avril Butler, Specialist Health Visitor and includes travellers themselves.

The project feels the critical factors for success are:

•  Having a key contact person.

•  Strategic support from the organisation.

•  Director level enthusiasm.

•  Keeping communication going.

•  Being prepared to receive unexpected answers.
