The Ujala Health Project

This project is the establishment of a 13 week health programme for the Black and Ethnic Minority community in the City resulting in more self help and stronger partnership working.

Patients stated from the outset what they needed to know or learn. They wanted to know basic health issues e.g. organs of the body. They asked for help from health professionals and small grants assisted the process resulting in the 13 week health programme delivered by health professionals.

The entire project plan was driven by patients' expressed needs.

The groups have requested further programmes which indicates from the patient viewpoint that the initial project was a success.

The project feels the critical factors for success are:

  •  Responding to what the community says they need
  •  Build on existing contacts - and find them if you don't already know them
  •  Build relationship/trust with groups
  • Work together with the community - a genuine partnership
