Llynfi and Bryn Surgeries

The group was formed approximately 12 years ago and has eight core members, all of whom are over 60 years of age.

The group fulfil a key role in helping patients fill in forms including home visits from group members.

The appointment system was an old fashioned queuing system and the PPG were influential in instigating changes in this. The new system is complicated but very successful.

Significant pieces of equipment such as ECG machine and Spirometer have been bought allowing procedures to take place in the surgery that previously meant a trip to the hospital for the patient. Other smaller equipment investment eases financial commitment for the practice budget.

The PPG feels the critical factors for success are:

  • You must involve GPs and management of the practice in your group - invite them to meetings.
  • Find out what is needed in the practice - either equipment or help or both.
  •  Meet regularly as a group to remind the practice of groups' existence.
  •  Have one member of group available at practice once per week and advertise that.
  •  Ensure you are not a group that is seen as just dealing with complaints - be positive.
