Cookham Medical Centre

The practice population is approximately 8000 patients and the PPG has existed for 15 years.

The committee of 16 people consists of 6 nominated at AGM and 10 who represent other groups from the community. The committee meets four times per year - one Doctor normally attends - if not the Practice Manager attends.

Health Education evenings are held annually. The PPG works with Doctors to plan topics to reflect the needs of the practice. Topics include Diabetes; Mental Health; Asthma; Obesity; COPD; Arthritis. Guest 'expert' speakers give talks at the event.

The Patient Library of books and videos which the PPG purchases and monitors is in the waiting room at the surgery.

The PPG has influenced improvement in physiotherapy waiting times through involvement with a Physiotherapy Review Group.

An Out of Hours survey has been carried out by the PPG.

Newsletters are available to patients of the practice three or four times per year.

The PPG feels the critical factors for success are:

  •  Build up trust on both sides
  • Accept mutual constructive criticism between PPG and Doctors
  • Do not be afraid to write direct to the Chief Executive of the PCT. Be brave but always polite.
