Central Manchester PCT

Lesbian and Gay Foundation (LGF)

A full sexual health screening service developed for Lesbian and Gay community in a static base and also a travelling service around the city of Manchester.

There were two parties involved from day one in a genuine partnership - the clients on one hand and the Steering Group made up of a mixture of clients and professionals.

Planning started in 2003 and the project became operational in June 2004.

The concept came from NHS targets regarding sexual health and the LGF had also carried out research identifying the need for a comprehensive sexual health service for its community.

Promotion has been successful through publicity, word of mouth contacts and the LGF Web site and other Web sites known and used by the Lesbian/Gay Community

The project feels the critical factors for success are:

  •   PCT must embrace PPI and encourage managers to take PPI seriously.
  •  Give patients as many options as possible to give feedback about services
