Adur, Arun and Worthing

Building on a history of community development with the Portuguese community in the locality, patients identified a need for cards - produced in their mother tongue - to assist with consultations in a variety of healthcare settings.

This is a 'patient led' project where community development workers identify the patients and then help them become more assertive about identifying their needs.

Adur, Arun and Worthing PCT also have a formalised staff training programme for patient and public involvement. This entails a three hour training session every six weeks and patients are involved in delivering this training.

The project feels the critical factors for success are:

  •  Project is in response to recognised need identified by patients.
  •  Openness and honesty throughout the process.
  •  Partnership working with the community.
  • Explain why some things cannot happen.
  •  Ensure this in ongoing work - not just a 'fad.'

The PCT has also promoted the Signhealth web based translation service to its GP surgeries (see www.signhealth.com)
